Inbox placement testing sends test emails from your mailboxes to a panel of seed inboxes at Gmail, Microsoft and others, then reports where each landed: inbox, promotions, spam or missing. Buyers care because opens are unreliable, so a placement test is the only direct evidence of whether a domain is "burnt". Agencies also use the reports to explain to clients why a campaign underperformed.
How it works
The vendor owns a set of seed mailboxes across providers. A test sends one copy of your email (or a test template) from each selected mailbox to the seeds and reads which folder it lands in. Usually it also runs authentication checks (SPF, DKIM, DMARC), blocklist lookups and a SpamAssassin-style content score. Automated tests repeat on a schedule and can trigger actions.
| Tool | Providers | Extras | Price (as of Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Instantly Inbox Placement | Gmail, Microsoft | 94 blacklists; AI content tips; tests for mail sent outside Instantly; automations to pause a mailbox when placement < Y% or it is blocklisted | 2 free one-time tests; $47/mo unlimited one-time; $97/mo adds automated (help, plans, automations) |
| Smartlead SmartDelivery | Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo "and more" | 400+ blacklists; scheduled tests; spam alerts (product page) | Add-on $49 / $174 / $599 per month (pricing) |
| EmailBison | Gmail/Outlook scores | Native integration with EmailGuard, a third-party tool (homepage) | Not published |
| lemlist | Not stated | "Deliverability testing" and "deliverability hub" | Listed on plans (pricing) |
| Saleshandy | Not stated | Inbox placement testing | All plans (pricing) |
Standalone specialists (MailReach and others) still exist, and Warmup networks covers that market.
Instantly's pricing is internally inconsistent. Its pricing page ticks "Inbox Placement Tests" on every Outreach plan, while its plans overview sells Inbox Placement as separate $47 and $97 subscriptions with two free tests. Smartlead's SmartDelivery page promises "unlimited tests ... no extra fees", but its pricing page lists it as a paid add-on.
Who does it well
Instantly ties results to action: a mailbox can be paused automatically when its placement drops below a threshold or it lands on a blocklist. That closes the loop from measurement to protection. Smartlead's blacklist coverage is wider (400+ versus 94), but its documentation describes alerts rather than automatic action. EmailBison chose to integrate a specialist rather than build its own, which is the right call at its scale.
Where implementations differ
- Seed coverage. Gmail and Microsoft are universal. Yahoo, corporate gateways and regional providers are thin or undocumented. Instantly separately detects SEG-protected leads (Barracuda, Mimecast, Proofpoint, Cisco), but placement tests do not cover those gateways.
- Packaging. Bundled (lemlist, Saleshandy), tiered add-on (Instantly, Smartlead) or partner (EmailBison). For the volume leaders it has become an upsell line.
- Action. Report only, alert, or automatically pause.
Risks and abuse
Seed tests have a structural blind spot. Gmail and Microsoft filter partly on per-recipient engagement, and seed inboxes do not behave like a prospect who never opens your mail. A mailbox can pass seed tests and still go to spam for real recipients (How filtering works). The opposite also happens: tests sent in bursts from many mailboxes to the same seeds look like the pattern filters punish, which is why Instantly offers "one-by-one" sending with random delays.
A common practitioner claim is that seed accounts are reused across vendors and get recognised and filtered differently by providers. This pass could not verify it.
Placement testing measures the mailbox against a panel. Buyers want to know how the campaign is landing with its actual audience. The tool that estimates real placement from live signals (reply rates by recipient provider, sudden drops at one destination, bounce codes) and acts on it would make seed tests a secondary check.
What this means for an entrant
- Bundle basic placement tests free. Instantly and Smartlead charge for them, which makes "included" an easy point on a comparison page (Pricing strategy).
- Integrate a specialist (EmailGuard, MailReach) rather than run your own seed network at launch.
- Build live placement inference from campaign data: per-mailbox, per-destination reply and bounce anomalies, with automatic throttling (Sending limits and throttling, Bounce protection). That is the differentiated part.
- Add seeds for the destinations your customers actually email: European providers and corporate gateways if you lead with DACH (ESP matching).
- Show the limitation in-product ("seed placement ≠ prospect placement"). Credibility with sophisticated Lead-gen agencies is worth more than a green badge.
