The read
The best-known email finder with a huge free funnel — but its sending product is deliberately small, so it feeds users to sequencers rather than competing with them.

Hunter started in 2015 as "Email Hunter", a Chrome extension that guessed and verified work email addresses from a domain. Founders Antoine Finkelstein and François Grante (about page) grew it into a data platform — domain search, email finder, verifier, B2B discovery, intent signals — and added Campaigns, a simple sequencer that sends from the user's own Gmail or Outlook.

The surprising fact: Hunter says it serves "more than seven million professionals" with a team of roughly 25 people visible on its site. It is one of the largest free-to-paid funnels in outbound, and it hands most of those users to someone else's sending tool.

What it sells

  • Data — domain search, email finder, verifier (0.5 credit per verification), "Discover" B2B search with AI search queries. See Contact data and enrichment and Email verification.
  • Campaigns — sequences from connected mailboxes; recipients per sequence capped at 500–15,000 by plan (pricing, Oct 2026).
  • AI — AI searches (10–300 a month by plan) and "proactive suggestions"; an AI writing assistant is listed on the about page. See AI personalisation.
  • Data Platform API — credit-based enterprise data access; one example on the page is $6,500 for 1,000 search plus 200,000 verification credits. See API, webhooks and MCP.

Hunter did not answer the unlimited-inbox model — on purpose

Twenty connected accounts on a $299 plan is a low ceiling for a volume sender. Hunter prices sending as a feature of the data subscription, not as the product. It is a supplier and funnel for Instantly-style tools, not a rival.

Who uses it and why

Marketers, founders, recruiters and salespeople who need a few verified emails fast, and developers who use the API to enrich records (Founders and small B2B teams, GTM engineers). Campaigns suits small, personal outreach from one to three mailboxes.

Where it is strong

  • Brand and SEO. "Find email address" is one of the highest-intent searches in outbound, and Hunter owns much of it.
  • Lean, profitable-looking team. About 25 people on the site; Latka estimates $8M ARR in 2024 with 31 staff — an estimate, not disclosed.
  • European roots. French founders and a European customer base make GDPR questions about data sourcing part of the business from day one — a conversation US data vendors handle less naturally. See Data sourcing law.

Where it is weak

  • Sending is an afterthought. Account caps, no rotation focus, and no evidence of a warm-up network.
  • Commoditised core. Waterfall enrichment inside Clay, Apollo.io and the sequencers themselves (lemlist, Saleshandy, Snov.io) erodes stand-alone email finding.
  • Low average spend. Latka's estimated ACV is tiny; Hunter's model depends on volume of small subscriptions.
Not verified

Latka lists "2M customers", CEO François Grante and a Wilmington, Delaware HQ; Hunter's own page says "7+ million" users and a distributed team. Neither is a paid-customer figure.

Gap in the record

No verified revenue, paid-customer count, review-site ratings or launch date for Campaigns. No 2025–2026 acquisition or funding was found.

Trajectory

Stable and widening slowly: from finder to "all-in-one outreach platform" with discovery, intent signals and AI search, but still priced and positioned as data-first. No sign of a push into volume sending.

What this means for an entrant

  • Partner, don't fight. Hunter's users need somewhere to send. A native Hunter integration (and affiliate deal) is a cheap acquisition channel for a sequencer.
  • Data commoditisation helps senders. When finders are cheap and interchangeable, the sequencer that orchestrates them wins the account. See Contact data and enrichment.
  • A finder funnel is a strong top-of-funnel. Snov.io and Hunter both prove a free data tool fills a sales pipeline; consider a free utility (verifier, domain checker, placement test) as your own Hunter-style funnel. See Inbox placement testing.
  • European founding helps with GDPR trust — Hunter and lemlist show French teams can sell globally while answering EU compliance questions credibly.
