Who AI answer engines recommend

AI answers about cold email software are built from listicles, and in this category most listicles are written by vendors ranking themselves. Instantly, lemlist and Smartlead appear on almost every list. EmailBison and PlusVibe are nearly absent, and nobody owns the GDPR, Europe or reply-desk prompts.

When a buyer asks an AI engine for the best cold email tool, the answer is built mostly from third-party listicles. In this category, most of those listicles are written by competing vendors ranking themselves first. Instantly, lemlist and Smartlead are on nearly every list. EmailBison, the agency volume favourite (EmailBison), is on almost none. Three of the eight buyer prompts tested have no tool vendor in charge of the answer: GDPR compliance, Europe, and multi-client reply handling. Those are the prompts the wedge needs to win.

Method and its limits

This pass could not query ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Google AI Overviews directly. Perplexity's result pages are blocked by robots.txt, and scraped Bing pages were unusable. The findings come from three inputs: (1) eight buyer prompts run through a general web search tool on 5 October 2026, recording which domains came back, since retrieval-augmented engines ground answers in pages like these; (2) four of the top listicles, read in full; (3) published cross-category citation studies. The search tool does not disclose its index, ignored site: operators, and returns about ten results. Treat the domain lists as a sample, not as what ChatGPT says. Confidence is low by design.

DerivateX, Jun–Jul 2026100 buyer-intent queries, 20 categories incl. sales engagement, 1,259 Google AI Overview citationsThird-party blogs 63.4%, vendor sites 16.8%, YouTube 9.0%, review sites 5.0%, Reddit 4.7%. "71.9% of recommended products are named without their own site being cited"
LLMrefs, Jun 2025"Cold email marketing" across 7 enginesShare of voice: lemlist 75%, Woodpecker 71%, HubSpot 50%, Reply.io 46%, Mailchimp 35%. Cited: HubSpot blog, gmass.co, pandadoc.com, close.com, saleshandy.com

Two points matter here. First, a product gets named far more often than its own site gets cited. The DerivateX "ghost recommendation" figure means the recommendation is decided on someone else's page. Second, engines differ. ChatGPT cites vendor pages twice as often as Perplexity does, and Perplexity is the one that pulls in Reddit and YouTube. The only category-specific data found, LLMrefs from June 2025, already looks out of date: Instantly and Smartlead are not in its top five. That may reflect the broad "cold email marketing" prompt or the date. No Profound, Peec AI or Otterly report on this category was found.

Gap in the record

No vendor in this category publicly claims "we rank #1 in ChatGPT" with data, and no cold-email-specific AI visibility study from 2026 was found. Most LLMrefs keyword pages sit behind a login.

Three follow-up prompts point the same way. "Why are my cold emails going to spam" goes to deliverability vendors (Warmforge, Folderly, Suped, TrulyInbox). "Buy cold email inboxes / pre-warmed" goes to Salesforge's directory pages and QuickMail's help centre. "Reply management tool cold email agency multiple clients" goes to Smartlead (three URLs) and Instantly. On the wedge's own job, the incumbents own the vocabulary through feature pages, and there is no independent reviewer (The reply desk, Unified inbox (Unibox)).

What the listicles actually rank

Answer engines summarise these pages, so their order is the closest public proxy for an AI answer.

Listicle (date)Publisher#1Also ranked
lemlist (Jul 2026)Vendor: "We rank lemlist first because it is our platform"lemlistInstantly, Smartlead, Apollo, Woodpecker
Hunter (Jun 2026)Vendor: "I also work at Hunter"Hunter SequencesInstantly, Smartlead, Saleshandy, Reply.io, lemlist, Woodpecker, QuickMail, GMass, Mailshake
BounceZero (Jul 2026)Verification vendor, no affiliate disclosureInstantlySmartlead, lemlist, Reply.io, QuickMail, Woodpecker, Outreach, Salesloft
Hack'celeration (Jun 2026)Growth agency, affiliate links disclosedInstantlylemlist, Amplemarket, Reply.io, Waalaxy

Tally across the four: Instantly 4/4 (#1 on both non-competing lists), lemlist 4/4, Smartlead 3/4, Reply.io 3/4, Woodpecker 3/4. EmailBison 0/4. PlusVibe 0/4. Salesforge 0/4. That is the gap between buyer share and AI share. EmailBison appears to grow through invitations and word of mouth among high-volume agencies, with no public affiliate programme (Distribution). An engine that summarises listicles barely knows it exists.

The Salesforge network

An extended search for cold email tools "recommended by ChatGPT" returned ten results. Six were listicles on Salesforge-family domains: warmforge.ai, mailforge.ai (two), primeforge.ai, infraforge.ai and salesforge.ai (two). One company with several product domains, each publishing "best X" lists, takes over a results page, and so the source pool an engine draws from. See Salesforge and the Forge: SEO teardown and Subdomain strategy.

Why the incumbents win the AI answer anyway

Instantly's own site barely shows up in the battery. It still tops the third-party lists, for three reasons visible in the hub's data:

  1. Volume of mentions. Instantly's 1,977 sitemap URLs (Instantly: SEO teardown) and its affiliate programme (Affiliate and review-site SEO) mean almost every comparison writer has a reason to include it.
  2. Comparison pages by others. Woodpecker, Reply.io, Snov.io, SmartReach and Saleshandy all publish "Instantly vs X" or "Smartlead vs Instantly" pages (Comparison and alternatives pages). Each one reinforces that the pair is the category default, even when it argues against them.
  3. Review-site gravity. G2 and Capterra are among the most-cited domains in every cross-category study. They reward install base, and the incumbents have it.

The rival who writes the comparison controls the framing. The incumbent still gets the mention.

Non-English and niche prompts

German, French, Dutch and Spanish versions of the same questions return a different set of publishers: Overloop, La Growth Machine, Cognism, HubSpot DE, Lexware, Hack'celeration ES and machine-translated Thunderbit pages. Instantly appears in German results only through its /de/experts/ marketplace profiles. Smartlead does not appear. Details are in The keyword landscape. A model answering in German grounds on pages Instantly and Smartlead have not written.

What this means for an entrant

  • Do not expect your own site to be cited. Plan to be named on other people's pages. The work is listicle inclusion, review-site profiles and an affiliate programme that pays writers to include you (Affiliate and review-site SEO). Sixty-plus percent of AI Overview citations go to third-party blogs.
  • Own the prompts with no owner. "GDPR compliant cold email tool", "cold email software Europe" and their German and French versions are answered today by lawyers and consultancies. Publish the reference answer: a country-by-country rule table (EU/EEA country matrix), a named DPA and EU hosting facts, in English and German. Then get it cited by the GDPR blogs that already rank.
  • Name the reply-desk category before Smartlead does. "Multi-client reply management for agencies" is owned by Smartlead and Instantly feature pages, with no third-party review. A neutral comparison of how each sequencer's unibox handles 30 clients would be the first independent source for that prompt.
  • Write the honest comparison everyone links to. Listicles by vendors that rank themselves first are the norm and readers discount them. A transparent, dated, methodology-first comparison (SmartReach's "priced at a realistic team configuration" approach) is the format engines quote.
  • Measure before spending. Track a fixed set of 30–50 prompts monthly in two or three engines with a paid monitor or a scripted API panel. The public data here is too thin to prove share of answer, and the AEO playbook: being the answer should start from your own baseline.
