Cold email is a small search market with big brands. The head term "cold email" sits around 14.8K searches a month according to Exploding Topics. The brands are bigger than the category: "lemlist" 74K, "instantly ai" 33.1K, "saleshandy" 14.8K. Most buyers already know a name before they search. Category terms are where challengers fight over the people who don't.
The English clusters are crowded with vendor blogs ranking themselves (see Who AI answer engines recommend). The under-served clusters are EU and legal terms and agency operations terms, and in every language outside German, buyers use the English phrase.
Absolute volumes here come only from Exploding Topics topic pages (accessed 5 October 2026). The page does not state geography or method, but the figures match Google Keyword Planner's rounding buckets. Everything else is a Google Trends relative index (0–100, past 12 months, pulled 5 October 2026). A Trends ratio says one term is searched N times more than another in the same comparison, not how many searches either gets. Semrush's public domain page served a Bangladesh database to this pass's IP, so it was not used. Ahrefs, Semrush and Keyword Planner volumes for most terms below are unknown.
The map
| Cluster | Example terms | Demand evidence | Who owns the results today | Served? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Head | cold email, cold email software, cold outreach | "cold email" ~14.8K/mo (Exploding Topics). Trends: "cold email software" ≈ 2× "cold email tool"; "cold outreach" ≈ ⅙ of "cold email" | Vendor listicles: lemlist, Hunter, Instantly, Salesforge, Enginy; affiliates (Hack'celeration, BounceZero) | Crowded |
| Brand | lemlist, instantly ai, saleshandy, reply io | 74K / 33.1K / 14.8K / 2.9K (Exploding Topics). Smartlead and EmailBison: no topic page | The brands | Not contestable |
| Alternatives / vs | instantly alternative, smartlead vs instantly, lemlist alternative | Trends: "instantly alternative" ≈ ⅐ of "cold email software"; "smartlead alternative" below the Trends threshold | Rival vendors (Woodpecker, Reply.io, Snov.io, QuickMail, Warmforge, SmartReach) and directories | Crowded but cheap to enter (Comparison and alternatives pages) |
| Problem | email deliverability, why are my emails going to spam, email warmup | Trends: "email deliverability" ≈ ¼ of "cold email"; "email warmup" ≈ 1⁄30 | Deliverability vendors (Warmforge, Folderly, Suped, TrulyInbox, Mailmeteor) and Saleshandy/Snov.io guides | Crowded, high intent |
| Infra | buy email accounts, pre-warmed inboxes, google workspace reseller | Trends (own set): "buy email accounts" ≈ "email warmup" ≈ 2× "google workspace reseller"; "zapmail" ≈ 4× "mailforge" | Salesforge directory pages, QuickMail help, Prospeo; infra vendors (Inbox & domain infrastructure) | Contested by resellers |
| EU / legal (EN) | GDPR cold email, is cold email legal, cold email software Europe | Trends: "gdpr cold email" ≈ 1⁄100 of "cold email"; "is cold email legal" below threshold | GDPR consultancies (gdprlocal, complydog), QuickMail, Hunter's legal post, Knowlee | Under-served by tool vendors |
| EU / legal (local) | Kaltakquise E-Mail erlaubt, prospection B2B email RGPD, cold mailing AVG | See next section | Lexware, HubSpot DE, Cognism DE/FR, Overloop FR, Zeliq, solo consultants | Under-served by sequencers |
| Agency | cold email tool for agencies, white label cold email, reply management agency | Volume unknown | Mailshake and EmailBison blogs; Smartlead and Instantly feature pages; Salesforge | Thin, and the reply-desk job has no independent owner |
| Agent email | email api for ai agents, email infrastructure for ai agents | Trends: "email api" ≈ 3.5× "cold email"; "agentmail" and "ai sdr" barely register | AgentMail, Nylas, mails.ai | New, owned by AgentMail (The agent email market) |
"lemlist" Trends interest jumped about tenfold between mid-August and late September 2026, peaking in the week of 30 August, and "lemlist alternative" rose with it. This pass found no news that explains it. It inflates any Trends comparison that includes lemlist over the past year, so lemlist is left out of the cluster ratios above.
Non-English: who searches in what language
Google Trends comparisons run on 5 October 2026 (past 12 months):
| Market | Local term vs English term | Read |
|---|---|---|
| Worldwide | "cold email" ≈ 46× "Kaltakquise", ≈ 46× "prospection b2b", ≈ 58× "cold mailing" | English dominates the global category |
| Germany | "cold email" registers at least as much interest as "Kaltakquise" (4.2 vs 1.7, low-resolution values) | Germans use both. "Kaltakquise" also covers cold calling and legal questions |
| Netherlands | "cold email" 18.6 vs "koude acquisitie" 0.1 | Dutch buyers search in English |
| France | "emailing" 2.4 ≈ "cold email" 2.2 > "prospection commerciale" 1.2 > "prospection B2B" 0.4 | Franglais. "Cold email" is the product term, "prospection" the job term |
| Spain | "cold email" 2.2 vs "email en frío" ~0 | Spanish buyers search in English |
The useful conclusion is not "translate everything". It is that the local-language query is the legal and how-to query, and the English phrase is the product query. A German founder types "Kaltakquise per E-Mail erlaubt?" before buying and "cold email software" when buying.
Who owns the local results
- German ("Kaltakquise per E-Mail erlaubt B2B 2026"): Lexware's business glossary, HubSpot's German blog (four URL variants of one post), Cognism DE, an AI agency (bakedwith), a sponsored post for Mailence, and two Instantly
/de/experts/profile pages. Instantly's crawl shows no language versions (Instantly: SEO teardown), yet its expert marketplace profiles rank in German. - French ("prospection B2B email RGPD"): Overloop (four URLs), Zeliq, Societeinfo, Cognism FR and a solo consultant. It is a Belgian vendor's game (France).
- Dutch ("cold mailing tool AVG toegestaan"): Searchlab.nl, Overloop NL, La Growth Machine DE, Thunderbit's machine-translated listicles.
- Spanish ("mejor software cold email 2026"): Overloop ES, Hack'celeration ES (three URLs), Enginy, La Growth Machine ES, Thunderbit ES, Woodpecker's Spanish blog.
Language coverage from the October crawl (search scoreboard): Snov.io has 9 language paths, Hunter 6 (23 hreflang tags), La Growth Machine 5, MailReach 5, lemlist 4, Salesforge 3 (fr, de, pt). Instantly, Smartlead, EmailBison, PlusVibe and Saleshandy have none. The volume leaders have left every non-English SERP to the classic players and to machine-translated filler.
No absolute German, French, Dutch or Spanish volumes were found for "Kaltakquise E-Mail", "cold mailing DSGVO", "prospection email RGPD" or similar terms. Keyword Planner access or a paid tool is needed before committing a content budget. The Trends values for German and French terms are near the floor of Trends' resolution.
Who owns each cluster, in one line
- Head and listicles: lemlist and Hunter (self-ranking), the Salesforge domain network, Instantly's blog; affiliates on top (Content engines, Affiliate and review-site SEO).
- Alternatives/vs: every challenger's comparison programme. In the search sample, neither Instantly nor Smartlead ranked for its own head-to-head.
- Problem: warmup and deliverability vendors who use free tools as bait (Free tools as SEO and lead magnets).
- Infra: Salesforge's directory plus inbox resellers (Salesforge and the Forge: SEO teardown, Google vs Microsoft vs SMTP).
- EU/legal: compliance consultancies in English, Overloop and the German SaaS glossaries locally. No sequencer.
- Agency: Mailshake and EmailBison blogs, Smartlead's agency pages (Smartlead: SEO teardown, EmailBison: SEO teardown).
- Agent email: AgentMail (Agent mail layer).
What this means for an entrant
- Do not chase the head term first. "Cold email software" is a self-ranking contest among vendors with thousands of URLs. A newcomer's page there will not rank and will not be cited (Who AI answer engines recommend). Enter through clusters where incumbents have nothing.
- Own the German legal cluster in German. "Kaltakquise per E-Mail erlaubt", "Cold E-Mail DSGVO", "UWG §7 B2B" are answered today by Lexware, HubSpot and consultants, with no product attached. One authoritative page per country, backed by the rule engine (Germany, EU/EEA country matrix), turns a legal question into a product demo. Repeat for France (RGPD/CNIL) and the Netherlands (AVG). Write the product pages in English, because that is how Dutch, French and Spanish buyers search.
- Name the agency-ops category. "Multi-client reply management", "cold email reply desk" and "client reporting for cold email agencies" have no independent owner and little measured volume. That is fine: low volume, very high intent, and you get to set the vocabulary before Smartlead's feature pages do (The reply desk, Lead-gen agencies).
- Use comparison pages as the cheap volume. "X vs Y" and "X alternative" terms are crowded, but every challenger ranks for some, and in the search sample neither leader ranked for its own matchup. A dated, priced, honest comparison set is the standard entry (Comparison and alternatives pages).
- Buy real volume data before scaling content. The figures here are buckets and relative indexes. Spend a month of Ahrefs or Semrush on DE/FR/NL/ES before committing, and track the clusters in Search playbook for an EU-native agency platform.
